A standing Gandhara Buddha in sharp black line, wavy hair, heavy robe, one hand raised before a solid orange halo. The caption reads OPEN FOR ISNESS.
Gandhara lay in what is now northwestern Pakistan and northeastern Afghanistan. Its sculptors, working in schist around the second century, were among the first to show the Buddha as a person at all. Before that he appeared only as a symbol: a tree, a wheel, an empty seat, a pair of footprints. The wavy hair and toga-like robe are borrowed from the Mediterranean world. The raised palm means have no fear.
