A woodcut striding lion inside a circular star-chart frame, Mesopotamian rosettes behind it and the constellation Leo mapped across its body. Curved text below reads Babylon Can’t Tame I.
The lion is Babylon’s own. About 120 like it, in moulded and glazed brick, lined the Processional Way to the Ishtar Gate, built for King Nebuchadnezzar II in the sixth century BC. The lion was the animal of the goddess Ishtar. The constellation is from the same sky: Babylonian astronomers called Leo the Great Lion long before the Greeks did.
