The Great Buddha of Kamakura, seen from behind in woodcut line: the broad back, the rows of snail curls, and the windows set between the shoulders. The caption reads BACK IN ISNESS.
The statue is Amida Buddha at Kotoku-in in Kamakura, Japan, begun in 1252. It stands 11.3 metres tall and weighs 121 tonnes. The hall that once housed it was destroyed by storms and an earthquake, the last in 1498, and it has sat in the open ever since. It is hollow: the casting soil was dug out through a window in the back.
