A woodcut of the teaching Buddha, hands turning at the chest before an amber halo, with a wheel, two deer and a row of small listeners on the base. The caption reads ISNESS AS USUAL.
The model is a fifth-century sandstone Buddha from Sarnath in India, dug up in the 1904 to 1905 season and still in the museum there. Sarnath is the deer park where the Buddha gave his first sermon, to five disciples, and the hand gesture means turning the wheel of the teaching. On the original the base holds the five disciples and, beside them, a kneeling woman and a child.
