A woodcut of the Buddha seated under heavy mango trees, orange fruit overhead, as two women kneel before him and a row of monks looks on. The caption reads PLEASURE DOING ISNESS.
The scene is Ambapali’s gift. She was a celebrated courtesan of the city of Vesali in ancient India, and when the Buddha stayed in her mango grove she invited him to the next day’s meal. The city’s nobles offered her a hundred thousand to give the meal up. She refused, and afterwards gave him the grove. She later became a nun, and her poem survives.
