A romanesco head drawn in fine black ink, its spiral tracked ring by ring out of a bed of leaves.
Romanesco is a kind of cauliflower. Each bud is built of smaller buds in the same spiral, repeating down the scale, and the number of spirals on a head is a Fibonacci number. In 2021 a paper in Science explained the shape: the buds are flowers that never finish forming, so each turns into a stem and tries again.
