A woodcut portrait of Bodhidharma, heavy brows and a hard stare, looking out from an orange cowl. The caption reads STRICTLY ISNESS.
Bodhidharma was a monk of the fifth or sixth century, credited with carrying Chan Buddhism, which Japan calls Zen, to China. Tradition says he sat facing a wall for nine years without a word. Painters have drawn him glowering and wide-eyed ever since. The round, legless Daruma doll is modelled on him, and is weighted to right itself when knocked over.
