A woodcut of the Leshan Giant Buddha, seated in its river cliff above three small orange boats. The caption reads SUPPORT BIG ISNESS.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is carved into a cliff in Sichuan, China, where three rivers meet. It is 71 metres tall, the largest stone seated Buddha in the world, and was finished in 803 after about ninety years of work. It shows Maitreya, the Buddha of the future. Hidden channels in the hair, collar and chest drain the rain.
