A bold woodcut of the Medicine Buddha on a lotus throne, a single orange bowl in his lap. The caption reads TAKING CARE OF ISNESS.
The Medicine Buddha, Bhaisajyaguru, is the Buddha of healing, described as a doctor who cures suffering. He holds a jar of medicine in his left hand, drawn here as a bowl, and the stem of a myrobalan fruit in his right. His light is described as the colour of lapis lazuli, and some paintings give him blue skin. Among the twelve vows he made is one to relieve the pain of the very sick and poor.
