A spotted trout in profile, drawn in classic naturalist black ink, every scale and fin ray picked out in fine line.
The rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, is native to the cold rivers that drain to the Pacific. A rainbow that goes to sea is called a steelhead: same species, different life. The sea-run fish can reach 30 pounds or more, and unlike Pacific salmon it need not die after spawning. It can go back out and return again.
