A bold woodcut of the grinning monk Budai, prayer beads in one hand and an orange sack over his shoulder. The caption reads ISNESS IS BOOMING.
Budai was a Chinese monk of the early tenth century. The name means cloth sack, after the bag that held everything he owned. He is often called the Laughing Buddha, but he is not the historical Buddha: Chan tradition holds him to be an incarnation of Maitreya, the Buddha still to come. In Japan he is Hotei, one of the Seven Lucky Gods.
