A woodcut Buddha sits in meditation on a flat rock while a monkey kneels beside him, tongue out, trying to fit a banana into his ear. The caption reads MONKEY ISNESS.
The pairing is old. In the tenth year after his awakening the Buddha left the quarrelling monks of Kosambi for the Parileyyaka forest, and a later commentary on the Dhammapada adds a monkey who brought him a honeycomb and, when the Buddha would not eat it, picked out the insect eggs and offered it again. Thai sculptors made the scene popular in the nineteenth century. The banana is ours.
