A Walking Buddha in the Sukhothai style strides mid-step, one heel lifted, one hand raised palm out, a flame rising from the crown of the head. The caption reads ON AN ISNESS TRIP.
The free-standing walking Buddha is credited to the sculptors of Sukhothai, in what is now Thailand, from around the fourteenth century on. The raised palm is the abhaya gesture: have no fear. The pose is thought to show the Buddha coming back from the heaven where he had gone to teach his mother. The long arms follow an old simile, like an elephant’s trunk.
