A trillium in bloom, three pointed petals above broad veined leaves, in bold black ink.
The western trillium, Trillium ovatum, does everything in threes: three leaf-like bracts, three sepals, three petals. The flower opens white and often turns pink, then purple, as it ages. Ants plant it, carrying off each seed for the oily morsel attached and leaving the rest to sprout. From seed to first flower takes five years or more.
