Four stages of the immortal jellyfish form a naturalist cycle plate between the words Stay Jelly and Turritopsis dohrnii: medusa, cyst, polyp colony, bud.
Turritopsis dohrnii is about 4.5 millimetres across, smaller than a little fingernail, and was first described in 1883. A century later two students noticed what it does. Injured or starved, the adult shrinks, reabsorbs its tentacles and settles as a cyst, which over the next day or two grows into a new polyp, the juvenile form. It can still be eaten. Nobody has watched the reversal happen in the wild.
