Tall lupine spikes in full bloom, drawn in detailed black ink, with hand-shaped leaves fanning out at the base.
Lupines belong to the pea family, and like other legumes they take nitrogen from the air through bacteria on their roots and leave the soil richer. The name comes from the Latin for wolf. One old explanation is that the plant was believed to rob the soil, when in fact it enriches it. About a year after Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, a lone lupine was found growing on the bare pumice.
