A woodcut reclining Buddha, eyes closed and faintly smiling, head propped on one hand above a warm orange bolster. The caption reads MIXING ISNESS WITH PLEASURE.
The pose is older and more serious than it looks. A reclining Buddha shows him at Kushinagar at the end of his life, lying on his right side between two sal trees, about to pass into final nirvana. The great example at Gal Vihara in Sri Lanka was cut from a single granite face in the twelfth century and is 14 metres long.
